My favorite art teacher always said, "Look... to see, to remember, to enjoy." This has served me well throughout life. I have since passed this bit of wisdom on to my children!

Your feedback makes me wonder what it is that faculty can do to increase the probability that their former students might remember them positively after forty years! And once we realize that we need to do whatever that is intentionally

If I hear of a class reunion or a homecoming at USC that you are attending, I'll be sure to attend because you are certainly one of those people that you write about. It's been forty years since I sat in your classroom at USC. Only ten years to go! Thanks for what you do, John.

This post raises an interesting question about "selectivity" and the kinds of differences we should expect between students at selective schools and non-selective schools.

At times, I think we make too much of "selectivity" and make false assumptions about the students admitted to these types of institutions. In my experience at one of these so-called "selective" institutions the only real difference between students at selective institutions and the rest of the pack are slightly higher HS GPAs, more impressive standardized test scores, and extracurricular activities that affluent parents could afford to provide.

I'm not sure they are any more mature or committed to education than many of the students at a typical state school.

John,
I too have trouble "unplugging." For my upcoming vacation I am hoping to take a lesson from a colleague/researcher. I am, at least, inspired by her dedication, though I doubt I will be able to go as cold turkey as this: http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2010/12/08/i-am-offline-on-email-sabbatical-from-december-9-january-12.html
