Does your institution have a comprehensive and coherent plan for student success? Join other college and university presidents and chancellors to explore challenges and solutions to issues of student learning and retention. Sponsored by the non-profit Gardner Institute, the Asheville President’s Institute for Student Success will be held on April 15 and 16, 2012 at the historic Grove Park Inn Resort in Asheville, North Carolina.
Purposes
The purposes of the Institute are
- To inform college and university presidents about the latest strategies and best practices that yield student success and retention.
- To discuss strategies for connecting issues related to the first year or transfer experience to larger issues of institutional life (e.g., fund-raising, strategic planning, reaccreditation, athletics).
- To share strategies for encouraging faculty involvement in student success initiatives.
- To illustrate ways to develop a comprehensive institution-wide plan to improve student success and retention.
- To encourage the knowledgeable involvement of presidents in creating and implementing strategies for student success.

Guest Presenter
Scott Evenbeck, President of The New Community College of the City University of New York and former University College Dean at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, will be our featured speaker on Sunday afternoon. Dr. Evenbeck has just assumed the presidency at The New Community College, an important experiment in American higher education to develop a new kind of college. He has vast experience in creating and sustaining a variety of student success initiatives in both two-year and four-year higher education.
Staff presenters
Sessions will be facilitated by staff members of the Gardner Institute who are nationally known scholars of the first year and transfer experience: John N. Gardner, Betsy O. Barefoot, Betsy Q. Griffin, Andrew K. Koch, and Sara Stein Koch.

Monday, April 16th, 2012
- Full breakfast: 7:30 – 8:30 am
- Morning sessions: 8:30 am – 12:00 noon
- Lunch: 12:00 – 1:00 pm
- Afternoon sessions: 1:00 – 4:00 pm
- Adjournment: 4:00 pm (Gardner Institute staff members will remain for follow-up individual conversations as needed)

The Grove Park Inn. This world-famous resort has been the vacation choice of many luminaries including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry Ford, George Gershwin, as well as U. S. Presidents Taft, Wilson, Coolidge, Hoover, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Nixon, Bush, Clinton, and Obama. The resort sits in a majestic location overlooking the City of Asheville. Features include the Grove Park Spa, ranked #13 worldwide, and the beautiful 18-hole golf course.
Fee: $500 includes all meeting materials and meals; spouse/partner dinner & reception on 4/15 is $150. Click here to register for the meeting.

If you want to arrive early or stay after the Institute concludes, you can get a better rate for additional nights by calling the Sales Center. Please specify the group name as Asheville Presidents Institute for Student Success. We also suggest you request a room with a view (based on availability) and also ask to be booked in the Sammons Wing if you would like to be closest to where the Institute events will be held. Cancellation policy: The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa’s cancellation policy is 3 days (72 hours) prior to 4pm on the arrival date. Deposit will be forfeited if reservations are cancelled less than 3 days prior to arrival.
Travel information: Asheville can be reached by air on Delta, USAirways, Continental Airlines and United. Alternate airports that possibly have more service times and lower prices are the Greenville/Spartanburg SC airport, which is 75 – 90 minutes from Asheville by car; the Tri Cities TN Regional Airport, which is 90 minutes from Asheville by car; the Knoxville, TN airport or the Charlotte, NC airport, which are both a little over 2 hours away. The Grove Park Inn is approximately 18 miles from the Asheville Airport and ground transportation may be arranged in advance by calling 828-209-3660. Ground transportation may also be secured upon arrival at the airport from taxis parked outside baggage claim.
